A Rare Disorder Can Make People Believe Their Loved Ones Are Imposters
One of the strangest neurological conditions is Capgras Syndrome.
People with this disorder may recognize a family member’s face but become convinced that the person is actually an identical imposter.
Scientists believe the condition occurs when the brain’s facial recognition system works normally, but the emotional response tied to that recognition is disconnected.
In other words, the brain says:
- “I know this face looks like my spouse.”
- But the emotional familiarity signal is missing.
That mismatch can lead the brain to conclude: “This must be someone pretending to be them.”
