Some Brain Disorders Can Make People Hear Music That Isn’t There
A rare neurological condition called Musical Ear Syndrome causes people to hear music when no sound is actually playing.
Unlike psychiatric hallucinations, this condition usually occurs in people with hearing loss or changes in the brain’s auditory processing. The brain essentially tries to “fill in the silence” by generating familiar tunes.
Patients often report hearing:
- Old hymns
- Classical music
- Radio songs from decades earlier
Researchers believe the brain is replaying stored musical memories when it lacks enough real sound input.
