A Brain Disorder Can Make People Feel Like Their Limb Doesn’t Belong to Them
A very unusual neurological condition known as Alien Hand Syndrome causes a person’s hand to move without their conscious control.
People with this disorder may watch their hand:
- Grab objects
- Unbutton clothing
- Push things away
—while they feel no control over the movement.
The condition usually occurs after stroke, brain surgery, or damage to the corpus callosum, the structure connecting the brain’s two hemispheres.
Some patients even describe the limb as having “a mind of its own.”
