A Sleep Disorder Can Temporarily Turn Off the Brain’s “Paralysis Switch”

There is a rare neurological sleep disorder where the brain fails to paralyze the body during dreaming. Normally, this paralysis prevents us from acting out dreams. When it doesn’t work, people may talk, punch, kick, or leap from bed—sometimes violently—while still asleep. What’s unsettling is that this condition can appear years before certain neurodegenerative diseases are diagnosed.
