A disorder can make water cause intense itching—with no visible rash. In aquagenic pruritus, contact with water can trigger severe itching, tingling, or burning even though the skin may look completely normal. Importantly, aquagenic pruritus can sometimes be associated with blood disorders such as polycythemia vera, although many cases have other causes.
