A skin problem can occasionally be an early clue to disease elsewhere in the body. Certain unusual skin findings can be associated with underlying systemic conditions. For example, acanthosis nigricans—dark, thickened, velvety skin often appearing around the neck or armpits—can be associated with insulin resistance. Rarely, a sudden and extensive onset can be associated with an underlying malignancy, particularly in older adults.
