Your Immune System Can Mistakenly Attack Your Brain
Some brain disorders aren’t caused by injury or genetics—they’re caused by the immune system attacking healthy brain tissue. One example is autoimmune encephalitis, where antibodies interfere with normal brain function. Symptoms can appear suddenly and may include memory loss, seizures, personality changes, hallucinations, or confusion. Because these symptoms often resemble psychiatric illnesses, the condition is sometimes misdiagnosed before the correct cause is identified.
