The Brain Can Create “False Memories” After Injury
People with certain brain disorders, especially those affecting the frontal lobes or memory centers like the hippocampus, may unknowingly create detailed but false memories. This phenomenon, called confabulation, isn’t lying—the brain fills in memory gaps with information that feels completely real to the person. It can occur after strokes, traumatic brain injuries, Alzheimer’s disease, or conditions like Korsakoff syndrome.
