Smell Loss Can Be One of the Earliest Signs of Brain Disease

Long before tremors or memory problems appear, changes in a person’s sense of smell may signal the beginning of certain neurological disorders. Researchers have found that reduced ability to identify odors can occur years before symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and is also common in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. While smell loss has many possible causes, unexplained, persistent changes may warrant medical evaluation, especially when accompanied by other neurological symptoms.
