Your Kidneys Filter About 180 Liters of Fluid Every Day

Your kidneys are constantly working, even while you sleep. Every day, they filter approximately 180 liters (48 gallons) of fluid from your blood into the first stage of urine formation.

But here’s the surprising part: You don’t urinate anywhere near that amount. Your kidneys reabsorb roughly 99% of that filtered fluid, returning water and essential substances to your bloodstream.

Only about 1–2 liters typically leave your body as urine each day, depending on hydration and other factors.
