Your Liver Can Regrow After Losing Most of Its Mass
The liver has an extraordinary ability to regenerate. Even after surgeons remove as much as 70% of a healthy liver, the remaining tissue can grow until the organ regains much of its original size and function.
Unlike many other organs, the liver can accomplish this through the multiplication of existing liver cells. However, severe scarring and chronic liver disease can limit this remarkable ability.
