A Diseased Liver Can Affect the Brain

Advanced liver disorders can lead to a condition called Hepatic Encephalopathy. When the liver cannot properly filter toxins from the blood, substances such as ammonia can accumulate and affect brain function. Symptoms may include forgetfulness, personality changes, confusion, poor concentration, and, in severe cases, coma. Some patients are initially evaluated for neurological conditions before the liver is identified as the source of the problem.
