Did You Know!
Hiccups are a common and often amusing physiological phenomenon, but their exact purpose remains somewhat of a mystery. While it’s known that hiccups are caused by involuntary contractions of the diaphragm muscle followed by sudden closure of the vocal cords, the evolutionary reason for this behavior is unclear. Some theories suggest that hiccups might be remnants of a primitive reflex from our amphibian ancestors, while others propose that they may serve as a way for infants to expel air from the stomach. Despite various hypotheses, the definitive purpose of hiccups in the human body remains uncertain.
