Did You Know!
Your Nervous System Has “Dual Brakes”—and Most People Only Know About One
Everyone has heard of the fight-or-flight response (sympathetic system).
But the body also has two different parasympathetic “braking systems”:
- The ventral vagal pathway (calms you socially and emotionally)
- The dorsal vagal pathway (slows the body so much it can cause shutdown)
Most people don’t know these are separate circuits with totally different effects.
This is why some people freeze or shut down during extreme stress instead of fighting or fleeing.
