People With Cotard’s Syndrome Believe They Are Dead
One of the rarest psychological conditions is Cotard’s Syndrome, sometimes called “walking corpse syndrome.”
People with this disorder may genuinely believe:
- They are already dead
- Their organs no longer exist
- Their body is decaying
In severe cases, individuals may stop eating or caring for themselves because they believe their body no longer needs food.
Researchers think the condition is related to damage or dysfunction in brain regions responsible for self-awareness and emotional processing, and it sometimes appears alongside severe depression or neurological illness.
