Some People Experience “Alice in Wonderland Syndrome”
A rare neurological and psychological condition called Alice in Wonderland Syndrome (AIWS) causes people to temporarily perceive the world in bizarre ways.
During an episode, a person might experience:
- Objects appearing much larger or smaller than they really are
- Distorted sense of time passing extremely fast or slow
- Feeling that their body parts are shrinking or growing
The condition is often linked to migraines, infections, or epilepsy, and it most commonly appears in children. The name comes from the strange perception changes described in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, where the main character frequently grows and shrinks.
Despite how surreal the symptoms sound, episodes are usually temporary and not related to psychosis.
