Human muscles are highly efficient in energy consumption. They rely primarily on a molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to fuel muscle contractions. During periods of low-intensity activity, muscles primarily use aerobic metabolism, which efficiently utilizes oxygen to produce ATP. However, during intense activities like sprinting or weightlifting, muscles switch to anaerobic metabolism, producing ATP without oxygen. This process results in the accumulation of lactic acid, causing fatigue and soreness. The balance between aerobic and anaerobic metabolism ensures efficient energy utilization in various activities.
