Did You Know!
Some People Are Convinced Their Loved Ones Have Been Replaced by Identical Impostors (Capgras Syndrome)
Capgras Syndrome causes a person to believe that someone close to them — a spouse, child, friend — has been secretly swapped with a duplicate impostor.
- They insist the person “looks identical” but is “not the real one.”
- This can also extend to pets or even entire houses.
It’s not schizophrenia — it’s usually caused by a disconnect between the brain’s facial recognition system and the emotional recognition system.
The face looks familiar, but the emotional “connection signal” doesn’t fire… so the brain invents the impostor explanation.
