Your Immune System Can Attack Your Own Muscles After a Virus

A condition known as Guillain-Barré Syndrome can cause the immune system to attack the body’s peripheral nerves.

What makes this disorder unusual is that it often appears after a person recovers from a common infection, such as a stomach virus or respiratory illness.

Symptoms can escalate quickly and may include:

  • Weakness in the legs
  • Tingling sensations
  • Difficulty walking
  • In severe cases, temporary paralysis

The surprising part: many patients recover most or all of their muscle strength over time as the nervous system repairs itself.
