Nerves Can Sense More Than Touch — They Detect Social Rejection, Too
The same brain circuits that process physical pain also process emotional pain, including social rejection or loneliness.
This is why heartbreak, betrayal, or being excluded can feel physically painful.
Researchers have found that:
- The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC)
- The anterior insula
light up during emotional hurt the same way they do during injury.
This overlap is so real that some people even experience reduced social pain when taking mild pain relievers like acetaminophen (not recommended, but shown in studies).
