Some People Literally “Feel” Other People’s Pain (Mirror-Touch Synesthesia Disorder)
Most people empathize emotionally, but a tiny percentage of the population experiences physical sensations when they see someone else being touched or hurt.
This is called Mirror-Touch Synesthesia, and it’s classified as a neurological-psychological condition.
- If they see someone get slapped, they may physically feel a light slap on their own face.
- If they watch someone rub their arm, they might feel a tingling in the same place.
Researchers think their brain’s empathy circuits are “hyper-wired,” causing sensory signals to overflow.
