Leprosy Can Suppress Pain—Permanently
Leprosy (Hansen’s disease) doesn’t cause body parts to fall off—what it does is even stranger.
The disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae damages nerves so thoroughly that patients often lose all sense of pain in affected areas. This leads to unnoticed injuries, burns, or infections—not tissue “rotting off” as myths suggest. Even weirder: the bacterium may reprogram cells in the body to mimic stem cells, helping it spread.
