The Heart Can Develop a “Broken Heart Syndrome”

There is a real medical condition where emotional stress temporarily weakens the heart.

Known as Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, or “broken heart syndrome,” it can occur after intense emotional events such as grief, shock, or severe stress.

The symptoms often mimic a heart attack, including chest pain and shortness of breath. The good news is that unlike many heart conditions, the heart muscle usually recovers within weeks or months once the stress subsides.
