Kuru is a rare and fatal neurodegenerative disease that was found among the Fore people of Papua New Guinea. The disease was linked to cannibalistic funeral practices, where the brain tissue of deceased individuals was consumed. The prions responsible for Kuru were transmitted through this practice, causing the disease. While cannibalism is no longer practiced in the community, Kuru served as a crucial example of how prion diseases can spread through unconventional means.
