Human hair is primarily composed of a protein called keratin, which is also found in the outer layer of the skin and nails. Keratin gives hair its strength, elasticity, and resistance to damage. Each strand of hair also contains melanin, the pigment responsible for determining hair color. Differences in the distribution and types of melanin contribute to the wide variety of hair colors seen in people around the world.
