One Rare Disease Can Make People “Allergic” to Sunlight
A rare genetic disorder called Xeroderma Pigmentosum makes people extremely sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light.
People with this condition cannot properly repair DNA damage caused by sunlight. Even short exposure to UV rays can cause severe skin damage and dramatically increase the risk of skin cancer.
Because of this, some patients must:
- Avoid sunlight almost completely
- Wear UV-blocking clothing and face shields outdoors
- Install special UV-filtered lights indoors
In some severe cases, children with the condition are known as “moonlight children” because they can safely go outside only after sunset.
