The “Ben Franklin Effect”:

Helping someone makes you like them more.

Instead of the common belief that we do favors because we like someone, this psychological phenomenon suggests the opposite can be true: we like someone more after doing them a favor. Ben Franklin famously used this to win over rivals—he’d ask them to lend him a rare book, then return it with thanks. The act of helping made the person justify to themselves that they must like Franklin, otherwise why would they help him?
