Certain Foods and Exercise Can Trigger Temporary Muscle Paralysis
A rare inherited muscle disorder called hypokalemic periodic paralysis can cause sudden episodes of severe muscle weakness or temporary paralysis.
Surprisingly, attacks may be triggered by eating a large carbohydrate-rich meal or resting after strenuous exercise.
The disorder affects how electrical signals control muscle movement and is associated with unusually low potassium levels in the blood during attacks.
Some individuals experience episodes lasting several hours, while others may remain weak for days. Between episodes, muscle strength can return to normal, making the condition difficult to recognize.
Although rare, this disorder demonstrates how changes in the body’s chemical balance can dramatically affect muscle function. Sudden paralysis, particularly with breathing or swallowing difficulties, requires emergency medical attention.
