Your Immune System Can Mistakenly Attack Your Own Muscles

Some muscle disorders occur when the immune system mistakenly targets healthy muscle tissue.

One example is immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy, a rare autoimmune condition that can cause significant muscle weakness.

Interestingly, certain cases are associated with antibodies that target HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme involved in cholesterol production. This condition sometimes develops following exposure to cholesterol-lowering statin medications, although it can also occur in people who have never taken statins.

Unlike ordinary statin-related muscle discomfort, this autoimmune disease may continue progressing even after the medication is discontinued and typically requires specialized treatment.
