A Person Can Believe Parts of Their Body Don’t Belong to Them
A rare neurological condition known as Somatoparaphrenia can occur after certain types of brain damage. People with this disorder may insist that one of their limbs—often an arm or leg—belongs to someone else, despite it being physically attached to their body. Researchers believe the condition results from damage to brain regions involved in body awareness and self-perception, creating one of the strangest known disorders affecting the human mind and body.
