Did You Know!
A Stroke Can Sometimes Cause a Person to Speak With a “Foreign Accent”
Most people know strokes can affect speech, but few have heard of Foreign Accent Syndrome (FAS). In extremely rare cases, damage to parts of the brain involved in speech can change a person’s pronunciation, rhythm, and intonation so dramatically that they sound like they have a foreign accent—even if they’ve never lived in another country. The person isn’t actually speaking a different language; their speech patterns have simply changed due to the brain injury.
