Love spicy foods? Just know this first…
Let’s be honest, jalapenos can take any meal to the next level with that spicy kick and Americans can’t get enough of it!
However, there is one warning to know before you decide to throw jalapenos on every meal you possibly can. The major active compound in jalapenos and other peppers is known as capsaicin and it is what gives the pepper its spice. Sadly however, capsaicin also causes one major problem. It is very problematic for those who suffer from heartburn/acid reflux.
In a recent interview with Eat This, Natalie Rizzo, MS, RD, “First, for those who suffer from reflux, spicy foods can inflame an already irritated digestive tract. Second, they may also take longer to digest, and food sitting in the stomach for a long time can cause acid reflux.”
So if you suffer from acid reflux you may want to think twice before asking for jalapenos on your next dish.
