Did You Know!
🧠Your Stomach Is Electrically Paced — Like a Heart
Most people know the heart has a natural pacemaker that controls its rhythm.
But your stomach has one too.
Hidden within the stomach wall are specialized cells called interstitial cells of Cajal. These cells generate slow electrical waves — about 3 cycles per minute — that coordinate the stomach’s muscular contractions.
These rhythmic waves:
- Control how food is churned
- Regulate how quickly food moves into the small intestine
- Help mix food with acid and digestive enzymes
Without this electrical pacing system, digestion would become chaotic and inefficient.
