A rare neurological condition known as Alice in Wonderland syndrome can dramatically distort how a person perceives their body and surroundings.
Someone experiencing an episode might suddenly feel that their hands have become enormous, that nearby objects are shrinking, or that distances have changed.
Some individuals also experience unusual distortions in their perception of time.
Interestingly, this condition has been associated with migraines, epilepsy, and certain infections. It is not necessarily a psychiatric illness, although its symptoms can resemble psychological disturbances.
Scientists believe these experiences may result from temporary disruptions in the brain regions responsible for processing visual and sensory information.
