A tooth can actually start breaking down from the inside.
A relatively uncommon dental condition called internal root resorption occurs when cells begin destroying the hard tissue inside a tooth. What makes the disorder particularly surprising is that a person may experience few or no obvious symptoms during its early stages. The tooth can look relatively normal from the outside while changes are occurring internally, which is why the problem may first be discovered during a routine dental X-ray. If it progresses far enough, the tooth can become structurally weakened and require treatment to prevent further damage.
