Did You Know!

You can develop a form of appendicitis even after you’ve already had your appendix removed. It’s called stump appendicitis, and it occurs when the small amount of appendix tissue that remains after an appendectomy becomes blocked and inflamed. Although this complication is considered rare, it can happen months or even years after the original operation. The surprising part is that both patients and healthcare professionals may initially consider appendicitis unlikely because the person has already undergone an appendectomy. That can potentially make diagnosis more challenging. Persistent or severe abdominal pain therefore shouldn’t automatically be dismissed simply because someone had their appendix removed in the past.
