While most skeletal muscles relax during sleep, certain muscles remain partially active 24/7. Postural muscles in your neck, back, and core continue working to keep your airway open, stabilize your spine, and maintain breathing mechanics — even during deep sleep.

This is one reason chronic stress, poor posture, or an unsupportive mattress can lead to morning stiffness or soreness without any obvious injury.
