Did You Know!
Your Nerves Can “Rewire” Themselves — Even in Adulthood
Most people believe that once nerves are damaged, they’re permanently lost. While that’s partly true for some areas of the brain and spinal cord, your nervous system has an incredible ability called neuroplasticity.
This means:
- Neurons can form new connections.
- Healthy areas of the brain can sometimes take over damaged functions.
- Peripheral nerves (outside the brain and spinal cord) can regrow at about 1 millimeter per day under the right conditions.
This is why stroke patients can sometimes regain movement months later — the brain is literally rewiring itself.
