Researchers have found microscopic crystals of magnetite—a naturally magnetic mineral—scattered throughout human brain tissue. Their exact purpose is still debated, but some scientists believe they might help orient us to Earth’s magnetic field, a sense humans may have lost or no longer consciously use.
