Did You Know!

You Can Lose the Ability to Recognize Faces — But Not Objects

A condition known as prosopagnosia, or “face blindness,” prevents individuals from recognizing familiar faces — even those of close family members.

What’s surprising is that many people with this disorder can:

  • Recognize voices
  • Identify objects normally
  • Read emotions

But they cannot reliably recognize faces.

This happens when a specific brain region called the fusiform face area is damaged or underdeveloped. Some people are born with it (developmental prosopagnosia), while others develop it after brain injury.

Many individuals with mild forms go undiagnosed for years, believing they are simply “bad with faces.”
