The lungs have an incredibly large surface area. In fact, if you were to spread out the alveoli (tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs) in the lungs, they would cover an area roughly the size of a tennis court. This vast surface area maximizes the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the air we breathe and our bloodstream.
