Kuru Disease: Kuru is a rare, fatal neurodegenerative disorder caused by prions (infectious proteins) and was found in a small population in Papua New Guinea. It was transmitted through the practice of ritualistic cannibalism, where the brain tissue of deceased relatives was consumed. The disease causes tremors, difficulty walking, and severe cognitive decline, and it has almost been eradicated with the end of this practice.
