The skin acts as a multifunctional barrier, protecting the body from harmful external factors such as UV radiation, pathogens, chemicals, and physical trauma. Its outermost layer, the stratum corneum, is composed of dead skin cells embedded in a lipid matrix, forming a waterproof and protective barrier that prevents excessive water loss and entry of harmful substances. Moreover, specialized cells within the skin, such as melanocytes, produce melanin, which helps protect against UV radiation by absorbing and dissipating its energy, thereby reducing the risk of DNA damage and skin cancer.
