The human genome contains remnants of ancient horizontal gene transfer events, a process more commonly associated with bacteria. Over the course of evolution, some genes in the human genome were acquired from other organisms. For instance, a study has identified genes in the human genome with origins in bacteria, suggesting a complex history of genetic exchange during the course of evolution. This challenges the traditional view of vertical gene transfer from parent to offspring as the primary mode of genetic inheritance.
