While the lungs are primarily known for their role in gas exchange, they also play a crucial role in filtering blood. As blood flows through the lungs, small blood vessels called capillaries surround the alveoli. Here, oxygen diffuses into the bloodstream while carbon dioxide moves out of the blood and into the lungs to be exhaled. Additionally, the lungs filter out small blood clots and other debris that may have formed in the bloodstream, helping to prevent potential blockages in vital organs.
