The nervous system plays a central role in regulating and coordinating bodily functions to maintain homeostasis, or internal balance. It controls involuntary processes such as heartbeat, breathing, and digestion through the autonomic nervous system, while the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) integrates sensory information and initiates appropriate responses to external stimuli. Additionally, the peripheral nervous system connects the central nervous system to the rest of the body, facilitating communication and control.
