The human stomach contains an extensive network of neurons known as the enteric nervous system (ENS), often referred to as the “second brain.” This complex system of neurons enables the stomach to operate independently from the central nervous system, allowing it to regulate digestion, control muscle movement, and even release hormones. The ENS can function autonomously, coordinating the complex processes of digestion without input from the brain.
