The Lungs Are Covered in “Soap”

Your lungs produce a substance called pulmonary surfactant, which works like soap bubbles coating the tiny air sacs (alveoli). This reduces surface tension and prevents the lungs from collapsing when you exhale. Without surfactant, it would take enormous effort to inflate your lungs with each breath—so this “lung soap” is one of the unsung heroes of life.
