Humans Have “Jumping Genes” That Can Move Around
Nearly 45% of the human genome is made up of transposable elements—often called “jumping genes.” These are DNA sequences that can copy and insert themselves into new locations within the genome. Most of them are inactive today, but historically, they reshaped our DNA, sometimes disrupting genes or creating new ones. They played a major role in human evolution.
