Your Kidneys Help Control Blood Pressure

Most people think the heart alone controls blood pressure, but the kidneys play a major regulatory role.

The kidneys release hormones that regulate how much fluid and sodium remain in the body. One key system is called the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, which helps maintain healthy blood pressure.

If the kidneys detect low blood flow or low sodium levels, they release renin, triggering a chain reaction that raises blood pressure.

This is why kidney problems and high blood pressure are closely connected — each can worsen the other.
